Sor's Maxim # One: "To regard the effect of the music more than the praise as to skill as a performer." from his Method for the Spanish Guitar.

Beginning at the measure marked with there are three parts - melody, bass, and a simple middle part. The middle part begins with a quarter rest sign, and is followed by the 3rd string quarter note "G". The quarter note symbol at times has to be offset a bit horizontally so it does not collide with the other pitches of the melody and bass parts. This offset does not effect the counting of the rhythm.

Although three-part writing at first may seem confusing, over time you will become comfortable with this aspect of music notation, particularly if you keep in mind that each melodic strand - whether there are one, two or three parts, is counted separately within each measure.
