Symboles is a work, mixing vocalises and poetry, for women's choir from 12 voices: 3 Soprani, 3 Soprani or Mezzos, 3 Mezzos & 3 Alti.
Commissioned by the Lumen Laulu choir, winner of the 2018 French competition Florilège Vocal, the work transforms the choir into an abyssal material evoking the ocean through tiling of vocalises interspersed with textual evocations composed by the author. Through these tilings, the tonal writing is saturated with delays and enrichments of chords opening up to different perspectives of interpretation of the harmonic discourse. In addition, the vocalises sculpt the harmonic space by asking each chorister to gently modulate their phonemes in their own time, symbolizing the dangerous inconstancy of the waves.
The central part, composed on a text extract from Victor Hugo, represents a stormy power that drowns the listener in an imposing tonal material.
