The story Piae Cantiones is one of the most romantic in the history of music. Published in Sweden in 1582 it was found by a British Diplomat in a second-hand bookshop in 1853, brought back to England and given to two notable English music scholars, John Mason Neale and Thomas Helmore who used it to launch some of the most well known carols of all time onto the world. Personent Hodie, Unto us a boy is born, In Dulci Jubilo, Of the Father's Heart begotten among them but of course the most famous tune was Tempus adest floridum a spring carol to which the immortal story of Good King Wenceslas was added. This lively selection features most of these tunes and will put you immediately into the Christmas spirit.
