A few years ago I lectured on An Engineer's Approach to Music Appreciation for Chicago Area Mensa, and later for the Annual General Gathering of Intertel. Both presentations were well received; and fortunately Jean Becker, Chairman of American Mensa, attended my first lecture. She recently recommended that I create music as Mensa celebrates its 60th Anniversary in 2006." RB: "Arrr, me mateys, that be a sure sign of genius, by my reckonin'. Well sir, this Fanfare took shape in Ann Arbor, Michigan in September 2005. There was a beauteous Full Moon too – mighty appropriate for our Right Brain vs. Left Brain thinking (about time I had first billing!), so the title Fanfare for a Meeting of the Minds fit right in. A quasi-tango timpani rhythm kicks it off, to symbolize that Mensans in all walks of life march to the beat of a different drummer." LB: "Very apt indeed. A majestic horn theme conveys both gravity and optimism, and is gradually joined by the other brasses, with interplay between duple and triple rhythms. One might infer that this fanfare is symbolic of our two minds. I trust you agree?" RB: "Whatever rings your chimes, Brainy Boy, except we have no chimes. All I know is that there was a nice Full Moon, and you're just plain Luny. Anyway our Fanfare is for 12 players: 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones and tuba in the brass; plus timpani (F, B-Flat, C), snare drum, tambourine, bass drum and cymbals in the percussion. That's an even dozen, cousin."
