The follows traditional evening prayer themes, thanking God for the passing day, asking for God’s protection in the night, and commending the needy to God’s care. Verse 2 refers to cosmological spirituality, inspired by star gazing on the Isle of Iona. The poem reclaims the night from the realm of evil, assuring the hearers that dreams, shadows and darkness reveal God’s presence as much as daylight.
