This traditional Rhineland carol appeared in Michael Praetorius's "Musae Sioniae", 1609. The words by St Germanus of Constantinople (c.655-754) were translated by John Mason Neale. The descant has been applied to both verse 4 and verse 5, some hymnals not including the latter.
