The Epiphany hymn "When Christ's appearing was made known" is here translated by John Mason Neale (1818-1866) from the original words of Caelius Sedulius, an Italian poet writing in Greece in the 5th century. The melody "Erhalt uns, Herr" was published in Joseph Krug's Wittenberg hymnal "Geistliche Lieder" (1543). A harmonisation by Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) appears in "Hymnal 1982".
