Ensemble was originally written in 1997 and was revised in 2012. It is for a chamber group consisting of flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, bassoon, piano duet, electronic keyboard and percussion and it lasts just over 5 minutes.
It was performed in its original version at a CoMA concert in Bath, United Kingdom. That version was ‘open score’ (with almost complete freedom of the number of players and instruments used). The revised version specifies the instruments (although others may be substituted) and the score combines fully composed music with elements of controlled improvisation.
The starting point for this piece is a series of harmonies which are developed melodically. The concept is unity, a unity created by combining diverse instruments in a united harmony illustrating how I believe that communities should live together in harmony, whether on a local or global scale.
