WILLIAM LAWES (1602-1645)
William Lawes enjoyed the greatest success as a composer of instrumental music, with compositions for the keyboard, and, more especially, with consort music for viols, with lute and organ, including a number of dance movements. However he was immensely popular as a composer of songs as can be seen in his simple Gather ye Rosebuds where we find music of the utmost fragility and nostalgia which has been sung in concerts from his day to the present.
