ENGLISH SONG: WHY SHOULDST THOU SWEAR I AM FORSWORN
Text: Anonymous
Music: CHARLES I (1600-1649)
Musical tradition has it that King Charles I was the composer of this English Air although it is listed in the first edition of Playfords Select Musical Ayres as a French Ayre, and subsequently in the second edition it is assigned to a Mr, Charles, and furthermore in the third edition to Henry Lawes! The cause of the confusion could be that the true identity of its creator was concealed in the first edition for political reasons, however Charles I was an excellent musician who studied with Coperario who was the teacher of Henry and William Lawes, and of many other distinguished musicians of the period, and was known to have composed a few other songs, so it seems likely that the tradition could in fact be correct.
