ENGLISH SONG:
BALLAD I LIVE NOT WHERE I LOVE
TEXT: ROXBURGHE BALLADS
MUSIC: ANONYMOUS TIME OF ELIZABETH I (1533-1603)
Not to be confused with the art-songs of the period which were contrapuntal in character with little or no melody, and drew the comment from an irate critic who said that they were as misshapen as if they had been composed of notes scattered about by chance, instead of being cast in a regular mould, this popular ballad of the time of Elizabeths reign, which was peculiarly rich in music as in poetry, far exceeded others in popularity. There are many versions and arrangements of this particular ballad, and over time it has suffered many changes in words and music but it still holds affection with the public, and is known and performed all over England and elsewhere.
