A descriptive piece written as an interpretation of the opening scene of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Using the same instrumentation as "Quartet for the End of Time" (Piano, B flat Clarinet, Violin and Violoncello) by Olivier Messiaen, it was written using the serialist (twelve-tone) principles of the Second Viennese School, this infuses drama with an emotive feeling to evoke the fright and unease conveyed in the first scene of the play. This was written for a workshop at Coventry University on 10th May 2004 run by the composer Philip Cashian and members of the Chroma Ensemble, who also recorded the piece. Printed copies of this score are available from the composer's personal website - see my Sibelius homepage for details (click on my name at the top of the page)
