This Elegy for Organ was composed in 1963 when I was a still a student at the Royal College of Music in London studying Composition with Herbert Howells and Conducting with Sir Adrian Boult. I played the finished piece to Herbert who found it very mystifying as it was totally different from anything I had previously written. It still remains one of my grittiest pieces. It was first performed by Anthony Greening, who was later organist at Lichfield Cathedral.
