Elegbara is named for the Yoruba Orisha, Esu-Elegbara. It is to Esu, best known as the "trickster" deity, that the first offerings are made before ceremonies so that he will not disrupt the proceedings with his mischief. Performing Elegbara at the beginning or a program is particularly appropriate. The work includes minor theatrics – a processional, which should begin with little warning from the rear of the audience – and three notes sung through the instrument, notated in the key of the clarinet with Sacred Harp-style shape notes. Performance on a "small" clarinet is strongly recommended.
