The tune Edmonton first appeared in Thomas Butts' 1760 publication "Harmonia sacra, or A compilation of psalm and hymn tunes : collected from the most celebrated European masters", where it was set to the words "Father, I stretch my hands to thee". The present words were translated by Edward Caswall from the French of Jean Baptiste de Santeuil, perhaps best known today for his hymn "Disposer supreme, and Judge of the earth".
