The one controversial point in this arrangement is that it starts and finishes with a minor 2nd in the main melody.
Most versions do not. Of course, you can choose to change it. -I have only ever heard this minor 2nd on one other version. I liked it so I kept it, although the middle section has the more conventional major 2nd. I suggest you do as you please!
Chilling, exquisitely beautiful & virile in equal measures.
The arrangement starts very simply as the beauty of the melody demands. The lower voices simply hold a chord under the soprano/solo line. It then explodes into polyphony in a way less in keeping with Romany Tradition, but essential to hold interest in an acappela choir performance. Having risen to a mighty (literal) shout, it ends not with a bang but a whisper.
We have performed this many times & though it benefits from a church acoustic, it is a great crowd pleaser in any situation.
