Monteverdi wrote this madrigal when he was a 23-year-old musician in Cremona. It is considered one of his finest early works. Tasso's poem describes the beauty of the dawn with the murmuring of the waves, the rustle of the breeze in the trees, the singing of the birds, etc.
In performing this arrangement, the music must be gentle and understated. The dynamics are only suggestions and should not be overplayed. Page turns have been eliminated to avoid disturbing quiet passages.
