The earliest finished compositions of composer-pianist James Siddons, created in 1965-1966, when the composer was 16 and 17 years old. The earliest work is "Mix 'n' Match," written in 1965.
These were the first Siddons works to be scored in manuscript, except "Improvisation in Blues," which began as an improvised performance on the composer's piano at home, recorded with a 1964 Sony reel-to-reel tape deck. These materials were placed in storage for over fifty years, and have now been transcribed in Sibelius notation.
The audio recording posted with this album has a short excerpt from each of the five works. Before each work's excerpt, chimes are heard: one chime for "Mix 'n' Match," two chimes for "Prelude to the Unknown," and so forth to five chimes (a C6 chord) for "Improvisation in Blues."
