My DURHAM DAYS 1957-63 were spent in the most congenial of company in both my College (Univeristy - the Castle) in Durham and the Music Department presided over by AJB Hutchings - typical Mad Professor. Among my fellow music students were George Selman and Peter Sayer both, alas, already dead to this world. On one occasion the three of us were silly and unkind enough to tease an attractive sales girl in Woolworth's by asking for a pound of 'peripatetic', which just happened to be the latest in-word in those remote times. We said that peripatetic was a powder which you added to flour in the process of making certain cakes. Naturally, the young lady was somewhat taken aback by this request for a commodity she had clearly never heard of. However, after consulting her supervisor, she was able to resassure us that, although they had run out stock of peripatetic for that week, there would probably be another delivery next week, if we wanted to come back then. Please listen with sympathy to my 'peripathetic'.
