The course of the river Wear (pronounced 'weer') has provided Durham with its peninsular on which stand the Norman Cathedral and Castle at the heart of this World Heritage Site, now given over almost entirely to the University of Durham. Back in the 'fifties and 'sixties it was one of the delights of student life in the summer term to take a punt out on the river and enjoy a lazy afternoon with wine, cheese - and whatever took your fancy - after the gruelling days of exams. This piece recalls one afternoon in particular, when it all went perfectly.
