In my Durham Days you had to wear a gown and a tie if you wanted to be admitted to lectures or formal meals in college. Teas were informal, and usually conducted in your room. The newly created commercial television station was called Tyne Tees Television - its transmission area covered the ground between those two other great north east England rivers, the Tyne and the Tees. (The main one is, of course, Durham's Wear.)University life was often challenging, but always fun.
