Freeman Lewis included "Dunlap's Creek" in his four-shape shape-note collection, "The Beauties of Harmony" (1813). The tune has also been ascribed to Samuel McFarland (1795-1868). Regardless of the attribution, this tune is one of the best loved early American hymn melodies. Fanny Alexander's hymns include classics such as "All things bright and beautiful", "Once in royal David's city" and "There is a green hill far away".
