original in D major for piano, published in 1863 under the pesudonym Oscar Litti. Later arranged for 1 piano 4 hands, published in 1885. Gottschalk was born in New Orleans, which he left at age 13 to train in Europe. The Paris Conservatoire rejected him without an audition, with the head of the piano faculty commenting that "America is a country of steam engines." He died at age 40 after collapsing while performing in Rio de Janeiro.
