Originally written in 2008 but revamped in 2013, Down to the Wire is a very traditional swing piece. The name comes from what it would possibly sound like if you had to defuse a bomb in 1930s Chicago.
As always, please get in touch (michael.roberts@ucl.ac.uk) for formatted parts, comments or requests. I’m happy to arrange this piece to suit your ensemble, whether you want it easier (or harder!) or simply for different instruments. I’m currently arranging this for an 11-piece band and hope to have a real recording up soon!
In terms of performance, the rhythm section should be aware of the possibility of dragging and should strive to keep the beat on the edge.
The lower brass sections need to be strong and confident when coming in on the 2nd beat hits to make sure the chords are nice and full. Most importantly, swing it good!
