An original setting of the folksong "Down by the Sally Gardens" for recorder quartet, dedicated to the Walthamstow Hall Recorder Consort. Although often sung as if it were beautiful celebration of young love, Sally Gardens is actually a sad song full of regret. Using the delicate sound of recorders this setting tries to capture the poignancy and frailty expressed in the song, starting off with a slow rendition of the tune, followed by a more intense and passionate second verse in a higher key, and returning to the original key for a final, much dreamier, verse, with two melodic lines a beat out from each other.
