This lively arrangement of a well-known Canadian work song or sea shanty was originally written for a trio of young sisters. It can be performed with three individual voices or SSA choir. The piano part is rhythmic and supportive, with some added dissonance giving hints of a donkey's awkwardness, although it is believed that the donkey in this folksong was a type of steam engine. A change of meter mid-piece gives a dance-like character to the melody before the original, vigorous 2/4 meter ushers in an upward key change for the rousing conclusion. The voices sing as soloists, in unison, and in harmony, and singers reinforce the rhythm and text with outbursts of handclapping.
Vocal compass is B flat 3 to G sharp 5. The individual parts are not unduly difficult, but singers will need to be skilled enough to sing securely in parts.
