This tune was adapted by W.H. Monk for the first edition in 1861 of "Hymns Ancient & Modern", where it was set to the words by W.C. Dix, "As with gladness men of old". The present words, by Anna Laetitia Barbauld (1743-1825), are based on Habbakuk 3: 17-18. Barbauld was an English hymn writer, educationalist and poet.
