The melody for this delightful carol comes from 15th century France. The words we know were added much later by the Anglican priest, George Ratcliffe Woodward, who also provided words for "Past 3 O'clock" and published several books of Carols.
It may be performed as an instrumental or with a choir. If performing with a choir, the words for Verse 1 need to be repeated for Verse 4 - Woodford only wrote 3 verses, but this arrangement has 4, or you could always write a new verse! The third verse might by be sung by men's voices. A vocal guide is provided to show what happens between verses.
The Eb part is covered by an extra Bb part and the Alto Clarinet part is covered by Clarinet 5. The 2nd Bass Clarinet is optional as are the contra parts, but any added bass is always a joy!
