This delightful piece is from Palestrina's collection of Motets for the Feasts of the church year published in 1563. The text appears in various versions as Alleluia, Responsory and versicle throughout the celebrations of Christmas day.
The piece is given here a tone lower than in the original high clefs: a further transposition of up to a fourth lower than the original would be appropriate especially for male voices.
A blessed day illuminates us: come ye peoples and worship the Lord, for today a great light has come down upon the earth: this is the day which the Lord hath made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
