In 1491 the abbot Jean Mauburn (1460-1503) published "Rosetum exercitiorum spiritualium" (‘Spiritual Exercises for the Confraternity of the Rosary'). Elizabeth Rundle Charles (1828-1896) translated one of these Exercises ('Heu quid jaces stabulo') as "Dost thou in a manger lie". "The tune "Dies est Laetitiae" is from a manuscript in the Abbey of Hohenfurth, Bohemia, dated 1410. It was very popular in the 15th and 16th centuries, and is found in many places, including Piae Cantiones (1582). Mauburn is said to have wanted his words to be sung to this tune, the hymn to be sung as the congregation visited the Christmas crib." (Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnology)
