Rev James Smith preceded Charles Spurgeon at the New Park Street Chapel in London from 1841 to 1850 at New Park Street Chapel in London. He wrote this verse approximately 1840.

His words,"Oh, may our God bring back His people to primitive simplicity! May they all be slow to promise, quick to perform, and so fulfil the law of Christ."

The music is written on one staff, coined "stafflet edition" (or stafflet). It is designed to be played with minimum time invested for maximum enjoyment.
