The Spanish poet Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (1836-70) wrote a long series of poems about a love affair that ended. I have used two of these poems as the basis for songs.
In this one, the poet is struggling to come to terms with what has happened. A persistent pattern of semiquavers in the piano is intended to reflect the confusion in his mind. As he drops off to sleep, he imagines he is in church, and thinks someone is calling his name in the distance. When he awakes, it feels as if someone he used to love has died.
My thanks are due to Juan Ortega Aragón for his helpful guidance relating to the setting of the Spanish text.
