This is the first madrigal from Gastoldi's fourth book (1602) which has been edited for us by the American madrigal expert Martin Morell. (The complete book is available direct from us at www.Edition-MP.com.) The most striking aspect of Gastoldi's Quarto libro is that the great majority of the madrigals and, with one exception, all the five-voice ones are settings of texts from Battista Guarinis pastoral epic Il Pastor Fido (The Faithful Shepherd), an extraordinarily popular work whose expression of, and influence on, the aesthetic world-view of the late 16th and early 17th century is scarcely appreciated today. Gastoldis settings of Deh, bella e cara [No.1] and Ma tu, pi che mai dura [No.2] (both of which were also set by Monteverdi) are particularly noteworthy. This splendid two-part madrigal is offered here a fourth lower than the original but it is also available at the original pitch and in other transpositions.
