In the year 2006 the 400th birthday of the famous Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn was celebrated. To that occasion a composition was written based on Rembrandts painting 'The Nightwatch'. Fourteen composers all wrote music based on a subject of the painting. 'De Marketenster' is the little girl on the foreground. Al the compositions were grouped and linked in the final composition 'Rembrandt 2006'.
'De Marketentster' was first performed as part of the composition 'Rembrandt 2006' on June 6th, 2006 at the Hooglandse Kerk in the city of Leiden, The Netherlands, in an arrangement for: Harp, Flute, Alto Sax and Cello. Conductor and arranger was Huub de Vriend (Dutch composer and composition teacher at the Royal Dutch Conservatory).
