David's City was conceived as a pop cantata for Junior (7-11 year old) children. It is based on the life story of King David - using 'Once in royal David's city' as a starting point. It can be performed with as little as one piano part and unison voices, but I composed it to give as many children as possible the opportunity to play instruments too - so the score is full of opportunities! [I was lucky to have a Parent/Teacher/Friend Choir too, so there could be a 4-part choir included!] I also wrote a script and would be happy to share this if required. 'David was a good king' is intended to sum up the story of David. The song deliberately introduces the familiar H. J. Gauntlett tune for the hymn 'Once in royal David's city'; hinted at, then played, by the violin duet - so these parts (whether played on violins or not) are important.
