George Petrie’s “The Ancient Music of Ireland” published in 1855 accredits Jane Ross of Limavady with collecting the melody of “Londonderry Air” from a musician she encountered in the mid-19th Century whose name has not been recorded.
The words to “Danny Boy” however, originally written to fit another tune other than “Londonderry Air”, were written by English lawyer and lyricist Frederick Weatherly in Bath, Somerset in 1910. Weatherly modified the lyrics to “Danny Boy” to fit the rhyme and meter of “Londonderry Air” after his Irish born sister-in-law Margaret sent him a copy of the tune in 1913.
Weatherly gave the song to the vocalist Elsie Griffin, who made it one of the most popular songs in the new century, then in 1915, Ernestine Schumann-Heink produced the first recording of "Danny Boy" (See related score image).
