The "Dance of the Hours" is a ballet sequence from Ponchielli's opera, "La Gioconda". The opera music is beautifully scored and the melodies are charming. Those of a certain age will recognise the section popularised by the comedian Allan Sherman ("A letter from camp"). The Introduction is quite tricky for first clarinet and the Eb part is necessarily high and so tuning is challenging, but the Eb should be used in preference to the alternative Bb part if at all possible. If the introduction is too difficult the piece could be started at the Dance (letter F) from where the piece has no substantial challenges.
This arrangement is for 1 Eb (with alternative Bb part provided), 4 Bbs, 1 Alto (with alternative Bb part), 1 Bass with optional 2nd Bass, Contra Alto and Contra Bass parts, so a minimum requirements of 6 Bbs and 1 Basses.
