A setting of a poem by Ernest Dowson, about a lost love whose memory casts a long shadow over the remainder of his romantic life. He can try to erase the memory by immersing himself in a wild social life, but once all the eating & drinking, the dancing & the paid-for sex are over, the memory of the girl he calls Cynara comes back to haunt him.

The name is taken from a Latin poem, on a vaguely similar subject, which educated people of Dowson’s day would have recognised (Horace, Book IV, Ode I), and it should be pronounced with the stress on the first syllable (so it almost rhymes with “cinema”), not on the second (which would rhyme with “Sahara”).
