John Stainer's "The Crucifixion" (1887), a Passion setting designed for parish use, included this tune, set to the words "Cross of Jesus, Cross of sorrow". The words of the present hymn, "In the cross of Christ I glory", were written by Frederick William Faber (1814-1863), an Anglican priest who converted to Catholicism in 1845.
