This is the second in a set of Five Pieces for solo piano. (The addition of an mp3 MIDI realization would be fatuous and futile.)

Charon was the boatman in Greek mythology who ferried the spirits of the dead across the river Styx in Hades. There are two or three ways of interpreting the title if you chose: all are accurate: there is, however, not a shred of malice in the music.

From b.36 onwards the right hand should merely hold down the notes allowing them to resonate. (The piece was written especially for a piano fitted with aliquot strings owned by a very dear friend, but the technique of holding one hand down works just as well.) The tempo is always meant to be free - just as it should be.
