The piece is the Overture to Act II of ’King Eldred’, an opera for children. The piece is intended to accompany the sight of a group of children dancing.
The opening two bars, for clarinets, recall the trumpet fanfare at the start of the Overture to Act I (also downloadable from Charles McCreery’s Sibeliusmusic page).
The present version of the score of ’Country Dance’ was arranged for an orchestra which only had one trumpet player, so the second trumpet part in bars 3-4 was given to one of the clarinets. If two trumpets are available both parts in bars 3-4 should be taken by muted trumpets. This second phrase should sound like an echo, at a distance, of the opening phrase.
’Charles McCreerys beautifully melodic, intricately textured compositions are infused with classical, romantic and folk idioms.’ Samantha Gillogly, violinist
