Simply put, I love the music of John Bull (?1562/3-1628), the English composer, organist, virginalist and organ builder, one of the leading keyboard virtuosos of his time and an important composer of keyboard music. In the late 1970s I purchased a recording of the London Festival Brass Ensemble with Elgar Howarth and Alan Civil as the conductors which included three amazing arrangements by Howarth of Bull's keyboard works the Pavan St. Thomas Wake and Variation, Galliard and 4 Variations and The King's Hunting Jig. Soon after I discovered Howarth's mind-blowing arrangements and recordings of William Byrd's Earl of Oxford's March and Battle Suite (with the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble), in my estimation, the greatest arrangements of Renaissance Brass Ensemble music ever produced. I hereby offer, with much humility (and deference to Mr. Howarth), an arrangement of a short keyboard work for brass sextet. It is a delightful work and will be fun brass groups to work on and present as an opener at any concert situation.
