This piece is marked by abrupt shifts in tempo and mood between (and sometimes within) sections. Except for the "Allegro, jaunty" section, the ensemble is encouraged to make liberal use of rubato. This piece was written in response to the September 11, 2002 New York Times, which published a special edition "A Nation Challenged." The section featured the names and pictures of the victims of a year earlier. The faces fully covered seven whole pages, 20 across and 22 down.
