‘Contrasts’ is an arrangement of two contrasting pieces by Edvard Grieg from his music for Ibsen’s play “Peer Gynt”. It is designed to be played as one complete piece but each movement is a complete piece in its own right.
The first movement is ‘The Death of Åse’ which, is slow at 50 BMP and in the key of C Minor, was envisioned to start with each player entering individually from different points of the auditorium or different sides of the stage – though this is not essential - starting first with the baritone playing the melody. The alto enters next taking up the melody whilst the baritone plays a countersubject. Next to enter is the soprano and finally the tenor and by letter ‘D’ all players should have reached the centre of the stage where the movement can be played to its conclusion or take the continuation/attacca bars straight into the second and contrasting movement ‘Arabian Dance’.
Arabian Dance by contrast is in the key of C Major is a lively dance and completely different in style to the first movement and is marked Allegretto vivace – I suggest a metronome mark of no less the 124 BPM
