Using a classically-sized orchestra with the addition of a harp and celesta, all the material is derived from three short themes that change shape and mood within a harmonic framework that is deliberately tonal. Much of the growth and development comes from continually evolving free counterpoint that finally unites the three main themes in the closing bars of the movement. The title "Contrapunk" is a punning riposte to the pop culture that was in vogue when I first started sketching the work and still crowds so much of our airwaves today. This is my first attempt at a large-scale, orchestral composition and I would welcome any constructive pointers from fellow composers.
