This piece is dedicted to the tragic life of Mary Queen of Scots. Elizabeth I of England, who perceiving her as a threat, had her confined in various castles in England. After eighteen and a half years in custody, Mary was found guilty of plotting to assassinate Elizabeth1586. She was beheaded the following year 1787.

The Oboe d' Amore player should try and imitate the Scottish Bagpipes. The piece should be played by a chamber size orchestra of stings. There is an optional piano reduction for sale, and a part for players who want to play the Oboe only. There are four movements. 1. Allegro furioso. 2. Adagio - Sarabande. 3. Gigue. 4. Allegro furioso - shorter repeat of the first movement leading to a coda.
