I used this to help the young violinists cope with the "difficult" key of C major (low 1st finger on E string) and added "quirky" bowing for the fun of getting a different sound. It can be done in D, of course, but his means that 2nds and violas have to stretch for the C sharp on the G string…I preferred to get the 1sts playing the "Low 1". It is one of several rounds/canons that I used at the beginning of rehearsals to get the players warmed up and listening (varyning dynamics/playing with lower half/upper half only etc.)
