This Christmas I wanted to write an orchestral work that would express some of the atmosphere of mystery I feel when contemplating our Lord’s incarnation. This music is meant to illustrate the fact that in the former USSR, despite efforts to keep Christ and Christmas out of Red Square and the country; He could not be stopped and on Christmas Eve the Lord was, in fact, in the square and the hearts of men and women. A careful listener will discover several short carol quotes: "Here We Go A-Caroling" and "Fum-Fum-Fum"(in minor keys, in the cello and double-bass. The brass makes its entrance with an altered "Joy to the World".
