IN RESPONSE TO THE REVIEW: First, thanks for the interest and the positive overall review. "der Reis" means "rice"; "das Reis" can mean branch or twig. The German title "Es ist ein Reis entsprungen" comes from an early version of the German text. A literal translation would be "A branch has sprung forth." This is a prophecy from Isaiah about Jesus. It is not intended to be a literal translation of "Rose" as the reviewer suggests. Both "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" and "Es ist ein Reis entsprungen" are legitimate titles for the carol. "Reis" is the title used by the Oxford Book of Carols.
