The American poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, wrote this poem in 1863 at the age of 56, and the seemingly cheerful festive title belies a much darker poem. The American civil war was in full spate (1861-65) and his eldest son joined the unionist side without his father’s blessing. This, and his wife’s recent tragic death, probably account for the unusual nature of this carol which is far from celebratory although, if we believe the final verse, his faith appears to remain intact.
Christmas Bells is also available in a version for Soprano, Clarinet and Piano, but the versions are not quite compatible so do not try to mix the versions. Please don't forget to add the composer's name to any venues' PRS returns.
